Dragons represent power, heat, strength, and often an intimate bond of friendship that goes beyond typical human comprehension, but not beyond what we may desire from such a friendship. Dragon bonds are typically eternal and woven into a person’s existence that neither can exist without the other. Maybe that’s why we love dragon stories so much.
If you’re like me, you had all of the Dragonology books in elementary school. I spent hours looking at the depictions of dragons and wyverns as interpreted from different cultures and styles. Reading Eragon by Christopher Paolini, originally released in 2002, was like coming home and falling in love with dragons all over again. With the recent release of Murtagh, Christopher Paolini returns readers to the world of Alagaësia. Though I haven’t read it yet, I’ve been told that Murtagh is an emotional read for long-time fans of Alagaësia.
With the recent release of Onyx Storm, the third book in the Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros (recent as in, Tuesday of this week), readers across the world rushed to pick up the new release and hopefully resolve some of the cliffhanger anxiety that came with the end of book 2, Iron Flame. The book hangover from this one is going to be intense so I’m here with some suggestions if you aren’t quite ready to leave dragons behind when Onyx Storm ends.
5 Romantasy Reads for Dragon Lovers

When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker
An international bestseller, When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker, follows assassin Raeve and a brooding and heartbroken Kaan. Readers have said this book has an incredible magic system, an “immersive” (Amazon) setting, and undying love. This is an adult fantasy novel with strong romance themes as well. This is not a book for teenagers or children as the peppers are hot!
When the Moon Hatched has over 35,500 ratings on Amazon and 162,374 ratings on Goodreads and is definitely one you want to add to your TBR. Also, Book 2, The Ballad of Falling Dragons, is scheduled to be released on October 7, 2025, so you have plenty of time to get this hefty book read and reread before the release of Book 2!

Fear the Flames by Olivia Rose Darling
Fear the Flames is a national bestseller romantasy is the first book for author Olivia Rose Darling, and explores “reluctant allies-to-lovers romance” (Amazon) as well as bonds with dragons, quests, and side characters that keep the entertainment coming. According to Amazon, Fear the Flames is a “Best of #BookTok” badge, and while BookTok can sometimes lead readers astray, the 4.3-star rating on Amazon, with over 4,500 ratings, does suggest that maybe this time, BookTok was right.

Next, changing directions just a little, 3 of the 5 romantasy reads for dragon lovers are dragon-shifters which, I mean, to-may-to, to-mah-to.
Kiss of Fire by Deborah Cooke
Book 1 of The Dragonfire Novels, Kiss of Fire is a sexy dragon-shifter book that kicks off the 14-book series with Quinn and Sara. Quinn is a distrustful loner, even among his kin, but that doesn’t stop him from pursuing his fated mate when he finds her. This book follows Quinn as he learns what it means to be fated, and what that entails for others like him.

I really enjoyed this book and bought the second one almost immediately, though Quinn remains my favorite of the shifters. With 14 books in this completed series, readers will have reading material for days!
Kissed by Fire by Kimber White
Can you really go wrong with dragons AND billionaires? Xander Brandhart’s final shift is approaching, without a mate to ground his human side, he’s becoming more and more dragon every day. Enter Shae. The stakes are high, the peppers are hot, and the book has plenty of well-paced drama. The 5 book series follows a different family member, each book being an interconnected standalone. Kissed by Fire has 4.4 stars and over 2,400 ratings on Amazon as well as 4 stars on Goodreads with over 1,500 ratings. For those interested in dragon-shifters, fated-mates, high stakes, and long-lasting love, this is a great read.

Sacrificed to the Dragon by Jessie Donovan
Humans, Dragons, and Fated Mates, oh my! This is one of those books that makes its way to the top of my reread list every once in a while. Though he hates humans, Tristan is expected to fulfill a duty to his clan, sire future little dragons with a human. Book 1 of the Stonefire British Dragons series is a sexy story about overcoming prejudice and old trauma to find the love buried beneath it.
Additionally, with almost 19,000 ratings on Amazon and over 16,000 on Goodreads, Sacrificed to the Dragon is a great, steamy romantasy for those who love dragon-shifters! Even better, there are 15 other books to help keep readers busy for days or weeks.

So, whether you prefer your dragons as separate entities or shifting between forms, if you enjoy romantasy with steamy peppers and heart-stopping peril, I hope you enjoy reading some of the above. If I missed any you absolutely love, feel free to share them in the comments! I’m always looking for new book recs!
Happy Reading!
